----- Paul Abbottの今回の講演概要
Teaching and Researching Real-World Problems with Mathematica

        Paul Abbott

        School of Physics

        The University of Western Australia

        paul.c.abbott@uwa.edu.au

In teaching and research, simulation and modelling usually rely on
numerical techniques, while visualisation often requires a range of
specialised software tools. A common approach is to use a procedural
programming language such as Fortran or C. Although procedural
programming is very useful and powerful it can detract from the desired
goal of doing research.

A second approach is to develop “black-box” applications. In this
approach the focus is entirely on the problem under investigation.
However, a disadvantage is that computational techniques, and their
implicit limitations, are hidden.

A third way is to use Mathematica as an integrated computational
environment, which couples an excellent graphical user interface to a
high-level programming language. In this talk I will demonstrate my
approach, developed over the last 25 years, by working through a wide
range of real-world problems selected from my teaching and research.

In case you need it, here is a brief biography (with a photo attached):

Paul Abbott is a computational physicist in the School of Physics at
the University of Western Australia (UWA). Abbott obtained his PhD in
theoretical atomic physics from UWA in 1986. He worked for Wolfram
Research Inc―the makers of Mathematica―from 1989-1992 in their
Applications Department, and is presently a WRI consultant. Abbott was
the founding technical editor of The Mathematica Journal in 1990 and
continues his involvement with the journal as a columnist.

Abbott uses computer algebra in his research―on wavelets, atomic
physics, and special functions―and in his teaching. With Miyaji Chikara
he co-authored MathLink: Network Programming with Mathematica (Cambridge
University Press, 2001). Abbott won an international Undergraduate
Computational Science Education Award in 1995, UWA Faculty Teaching
awards in 2010 and 2014, a UWA Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2015,
and is on the UWA list of highly-awarded teachers. In 2002 he was a
member of a winning team in the SIAM 100-Dollar, 100-Digit Challenge and
in 2015 he won a Wolfram Innovator Award.
